OMO outdoor classroom day

When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment. Outdoor learning has also been found to improve children’s health, engage them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, but is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.

When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Our children are less active now than at any other time in history, so it’s vital we give them a little push out into the open because the benefits are endless. With this in mind, OMO partnered with Nature Play in Australia to encourage, celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play.

“They’re doing outdoor activities that are built into the curriculum; so kids are learning maths, literature, science, anything you can imagine,” explains Griffin Longley, CEO Nature Play Australia.

Outdoor Classroom Day

First joining forces to celebrate the world’s first National Day of Real Play in 2016 and then launching OMO Outdoor Classroom Day in 2017, OMO reached over 219,000 Australian children with thousands of schools around the world taking lessons outside and prioritising playtime.

The campaign was featured on television 9 times, with 579 shout outs on radio stations all over Australia and 260 pieces of print and online coverage, demonstrating how much this resonates with Aussie families.

Last year, over 3.5 million children worldwide took part, and 317,000 of those were Aussie kids, showing that the outdoor play movement is growing!

The next Outdoor Classroom Day will be held on November 7, 2019. Visit the website and help to build a movement that gets children everywhere outdoors to play and learn every day!
