Sustainability fuels growth and transparency builds trust
Sydney – 7 June 2018: Unilever Australia has today revealed its Sustainable Living Plan continues to fuel growth as cross-sector leaders highlight the importance of transparency in building trust.
Unilever Australia has unveiled its seventh year of global and local progress towards its Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) targets, revealing a fourth consecutive year of growth globally for its ‘sustainable living’ brands, which grew 46% faster than the rest of the business and delivered 70% of the company’s turnover growth.
Unilever hosted 150 leaders across the business, NGO, academic and government sectors for a discussion on the importance of business leading for trust and how better cross-sector collaboration can drive more progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Australia.1
Launched in 2010 the USLP set ambitious targets to decouple Unilever’s growth from its environmental impact, while increasing the company’s positive social impact. Today, Unilever is on track to meet around 80% of its commitments, which include improving health and wellbeing for 1 billion people, reducing environmental impact by half and enhancing livelihoods for millions.
Unilever reported it is on track in Australia to meet key commitments including:
- Sourcing 100 per cent of all grid electricity used in manufacturing from renewable sources by 2020.
- Becoming carbon positive in its manufacturing operations by 2030.
- Making 100 per cent of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable, and increasing the recycled plastic content in its packaging to 25% by 2025.
Transparency & trust
A panel including Jess Miller, Deputy Lord Mayor, City of Sydney; Andrea De Almeida, Executive Director, B Lab Australia & New Zealand; Dermot O'Gorman Chief Executive Officer, World WIDE Fund for Nature, Australia; and Clive Stiff, Unilever ANZ CEO, discussed the importance of transparency and trust as business looks to drive better collaboration and more progress on the SDGs.
Unilever Australia and New Zealand CEO, Clive Stiff said: “We have made good progress against our ambitious targets in Australia and globally, and the continued strong growth of our sustainable living brands tells us the USLP is making a difference, and that consumers are increasingly aware of the impact the products they are purchasing have on the environment.”
“We also want to be transparent about how much more work there is still to do. This is critical when we are witnessing a crisis of trust in institutions in Australia and across the world. We believe business must play a leading role in restoring trust, and that at the heart of trust lies transparency.”

There is an ever-increasing need for us to work in partnership to drive transformational change across our value chain. To do so will require a new level of transparency across the board and business must be part of the solution.”
The future of sustainable business
Unilever is already looking beyond its current USLP targets by carrying out its largest ever listening exercise on the future of sustainable business. Over 40,000 employees and 250 stakeholders responded to the ‘Have Your Say’ project, setting out their views on the priorities they would like Unilever to focus on after 2020, and what future success would look like.
In Australia, the top three priorities were revealed to be zero food and packaging waste, access to water and climate change.
Young Entrepreneur Awards
As well as providing a progress update on the USLP, Unilever also launched its Young Entrepreneur Awards.
The awards recognise and support brilliant young innovators tackling the planet’s biggest environmental and social challenges, and help them achieve scale for impact. Since the launch of the Awards in 2013, they have reached over 3,500 inspiring young sustainability entrepreneurs and provided tailored support and funding to 29 winners.
Mr Stiff added that by taking a multi-stakeholder approach, Unilever is able to leverage its scale and resources as a business to address societal and environmental issues while delivering economic value.
“We believe that it is not possible to achieve long-term business success in a world with poverty, hunger and climate change. We have long recognised that the only acceptable business model for Unilever is one in which the planet and society thrive,” Mr Stiff said.

- Unilever now has 26 sustainable living brands (up from 18 in 2016). New entrants include household names such as Vaseline, Sunlight, and Sunsilk.
- The list also includes Unilever’s top six brands – Dove, Lipton, OMO/Persil, Rexona, Hellmann’s and Continental – and its B-Corp certified brands such as Ben and Jerry’s, Seventh Generation and Pukka Herbs.
- By the end of 2017, 109 of Unilever’s manufacturing sites across 36 countries were using 100% renewable grid electricity, accounting for 65% of total grid electricity consumption.
- By the end of 2017, 56% of Unilever’s agricultural raw materials were sustainably sourced. In February 2018, Unilever became the first company to publicly disclose the suppliers and mills the company sources palm oil from both directly and indirectly.
- In 2017 Unilever enabled around 716,000 smallholder farmers to access initiatives aiming to improve their agricultural practices or increase their incomes.
- By the end of 2017, 601 million people had been reached through Unilever’s programmes on handwashing, sanitation, oral health, self-esteem and safe drinking water.
- Unilever was ranked number one in its sector in the 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In the FTSE4Good Index, it achieved the highest environmental score of 5. It led the list of Global Corporate Sustainability Leaders in the 2017 GlobeScan/SustainAbility annual survey for the seventh year running. Unilever has pledged to become carbon positive in its operations by 2030.
In Australia and New Zealand:
- By the end of 2017: The Dove Self Esteem Project reached 764,000 Australian kids to date; The Lynx Movember partnership generated $165,000 in funding; the Domestos UNICEF Australia partnership has provided 169,000 people with access to sanitation; OMO’s Outdoor Classroom Day in partnership with Nature Play reached ¼ of all Australian primary schools; and Ben & Jerry’s proudly supported Australian Marriage Equality with their ‘Love comes in all flavours’ campaign.
- In 2017, Australian manufacturing sites reduced CO2 emissions per tonne of production by a further 13% compared to 2016, and 30% compared to Unilever’s 2008 baseline. Total waste per tonne of production has been reduced by 94% since 2008.
- To date Unilever’s partnership with RedCycle has diverted over 2 million packs (3.3 tonnes) of flexible plastic.
- Unilever Food Solutions Australia’s Food Collective program, in partnership with OzHarvest, has generated 49,453 meals to date. Unilever’s corporate partnership with Foodbank donated 630,900 meals and 6,598 kilograms of non-food items in 2017.
- Unilever Australia was amongst the first companies to commit to the voluntary Australasian Recycling Label alongside Woolworths, Officeworks, Australia Post and others.
- By end of 2017, women accounted for 48% of Unilever Australia’s workforce and 52% of managers.
- Unilever has been named in LinkedIn’s Top 3 most sought-after employers across all sectors and named Graduate Employer of Choice in Australia.
