Household stain removal tips

Film on bathroom tiles

Woman cleaning the kitchen floor

A grey, white or yellow film on bathroom tiles can be removed with JIF cream. Pour JIF Cream over the filmy surface then with a non-scratch scrubbing pad work it into the film. Rinse and repeat until the film is gone. Wipe down with a damp cloth or rinse. The soil will probably be soap scum, which is a complex mixture of body fats, salts and soap which hardens upon drying. To avoid soap scum try using a body wash such as DOVE body wash in the shower and bath instead of soap.

Rust on ceramic tiles

If you have rust (not dirt) on ceramic tiles try the following method (but always test in an inconspicuous area before cleaning all the tiles). Squeeze a small amount of lemon juice into a glass. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and mix thoroughly. Cut a fine sponge or cloth into strips big enough to cover the stain. Saturate the pieces of cloth/sponge with the lemon juice mix. Place these wet pieces onto the stain and wipe off any excess solution that runs onto the surrounding tile. Leave for a few hours and then inspect.

If the stain is still there repeat the procedure. Rinse well with water. Bleach products can accelerate the formation of rust on some poorly glazed tiles. Try to avoid using such cleaners on these problem surfaces.)

Removing stains & odours from drains

Simply pour DOMESTOS disinfectant undiluted into the drain. Leave for 10 minutes to destroy smell and smell-causing germs. Rinse with water. The S-bend/trap (found under many sinks) is wonderful for keeping smells from backing up from sewers. However, grease and dirt can sometimes build up in them. A sink strainer is useful for preventing food scraps from lodging here. It's also useful to regularly pour a little DOMESTOS disinfectant down these drains to kill germs.

Removing brown stains from enamel baths

The stains are most likely to be rust in areas where the enamel protection has worn thin. Use a non-bleach product like JIF Cream to clean the surface. To remove the stain cut a lemon and squeeze its juice over the stain, then rub the cut lemon directly onto it. Repeat as necessary. Wash down with a cleaner like JIF Cream.

Removing stains from window

Prepare a cleaning solution of 1 cup of white vinegar to 4 litres of water. Spray the window and wipe it over with a newspaper until glass is shiny, or use a squeegee first and then buff up with a newspaper for that extra shine. (Tip: for a smear-free window, ensure that you clean your window on a dull or cold day. On a sunny day, the windows dry out too fast, leaving smeary marks.)

Removing mould from tiles

Pour a little DOMESTOS disinfectant onto the mould. (Remember to wear gloves and glasses to protect your eyes and spot test on a small section first.) For hard-to-reach places dampen a cotton bud and swab the mould. Work the DOMESTOS disinfectant into the grout with an old toothbrush or a nylon scrubbing brush. To prevent splashing use small gentle strokes.

If DOMESTOS disinfectant comes in contact with metal surfaces, wipe it off immediately. DOMESTOS disinfectant can bleach fabrics so avoid splashing. Leave for 10 minutes then wash away the mould from the grout. Mould can grow anywhere as long as there is enough moisture. Try drying tiles with a towel after rinsing to prevent mould.

Removing stains from laminate benchtops

Pour a little JIF Cream on a cloth or sponge. Place the cloth on the surface with the JIF in contact with the stain. Gently rub the stain. Rinse cloth and wipe surface clear. If stain persists, cover stain with kitchen paper or cloth. Squeeze lemon juice onto paper/cloth until saturated. Leave in contact with stain until stain has faded away. Wipe down surface to remove stain and lemon juice.

Removing stains from microwave ovens

We recommend testing in an inconspicuous area before using this method. Removable parts should be taken to the sink and washed with a dishwashing detergent. With a warm damp cloth gently wipe the oven with JIF Cream. For stubborn stains place a bowl with water into the oven. 'Cook' for about 3 minutes, then allow to stand for a few minutes. Finish by wiping surface dry with another cloth.

Removing stains from plastic or glass chopping boards

Scrub the surface using a stiff brush under hot water to remove any food or stains. Rub chopping boards with a cloth and DOMESTOS to kill any surface bacteria. Leave for a few minutes. Wash the chopping board under water thoroughly.

Removing stains from wooden chopping boards

Scrub the surface using a stiff brush under hot water to remove any food or stains. Then, with the cut side of a lemon, rub some salt onto the board. Wash thoroughly with a solution of dishwashing liquid.
