Fish stocks worldwide are in serious decline. As one of the world's largest fish buyers, we believe it's in everyone's interests to source fish only from sustainable supplies.

Sustainable fishOur approach

In 1996 we made a commitment to source all our fish from sustainable stocks. Since then we’ve been working closely with people including suppliers, the fishing industry, governments and non-governmental organisations to bring this commitment to life.

And the results so far? By the end of 2003 we were buying more than half our fish from sustainable sources and by the end of 2005 we expect this figure will rise to three-quarters.

Yet there are many factors influencing the development of sustainable fishing that are outside our control. Governments have a role to play ensuring fish stocks are conserved and more research is needed on the ecological impacts of fishing. What’s more, some suppliers, manufacturers and retailers have been slow to support sustainable fisheries.

Despite this, we remain firmly committed to helping drive the fisheries market towards a sustainable future. We buy fish from about 100 suppliers and are working closely with them to bring about change in how fisheries and fish stocks are managed. Through marketing and packaging we’re raising awareness of the impact we can all have through the choices we make when shopping.
