Domestos can be used in households with septic tanks when used as directed. When the disinfectant enters the drains it reacts with the dirt and grime to form a harmless salt. This is diluted enormously by water coming from other drains in the home resulting in a very weak salt solution  going into contact with the bugs in the septic tank. The harmless nature of this solution has been confirmed in tests with traditional septic tanks. Care should be taken with the relatively new aerobic septic tanks marketed under such names as Envirocycle and Biocycle. Although Domestos disinfectant is expected to be as harmless in these systems as in traditional tanks sufficient tests have not been carried out on these systems. We therefore advise here that you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Under any circumstances cleaning products (like Domestos disinfectant) should not be directly poured into septic tanks.

Domestos 5x Toilet Cleaner has not been tested on septic tanks therefore we can only recommend that septic tank owners contact their septic tank manufacturer for advice.

The most significant difference between the variants is fragrance. This has been done to give people greater choice and variety. All variants are powerful cleaners and hospital grade disinfectants. Domestos regular (dark blue in colour). Domestos Mountain Fresh (Green) has a fresh mountain fragrance. Domestos pink power (Pink) is fruity with eucalyptus, woody and amber notes (not available in New Zealand). Domestos Citrus Fresh (Yellow) has a fresh citrus fragrance.

Domestos disinfectant should not be left on metals. Prolonged contact with surfaces such as aluminium can form grey or rusty stains. If the product is used on taps or metallic surfaces then it should be immediately wiped off with a damp cloth.

Domestos disinfectant can be used to clean and even disinfect shower screens. For most grime simply dilute Domestos disinfectant (125mL in half a bucket of hot water) and apply onto the surface using a cloth. (If the shower screen frames come in contact with this solution immediately wipe these down with a damp cloth.) After a few minutes rinse. Alternatively wipe the screen down with a clean damp cloth. To disinfect the surface apply the product undiluted. Leave the product for 10 minutes before rinsing.
